Scholars remain divided
over the nature of early Eurasian symbol systems, particularly those associated
with the Neolithic Balkans. Proposed frameworks, such as Marija Gimbutas’ “Old
European Script” and Harald Haarmann’s “Danube Script”, suggest these markings
constituted functional, ritualistic, or early linguistic notation systems that
predated Mesopotamian cuneiform. Conversely, significant counter-arguments
challenge the existence of a true script within these traditions. Addressing
this debate, this study investigates the broader phenomenon of pre-writing and
proto-writing across Eurasia. It presents existing methodologies and
archaeological discoveries to enquire whether unclassified symbol assemblages
can meet the formal definitions of writing.
