Abstract
Radiation monitoring is essential for environmental protection and occupational safety, yet many commercial radiation monitoring systems are costly and technically demanding, limiting their accessibility for routine field applications, particularly in developing countries. This study developed and evaluated a low-cost, portable, and in-situ radiation detector for real-time environmental radiation monitoring. The system integrated a Geiger–Müller (GM) tube, Arduino Uno microcontroller, ESP32 wireless communication module, display components, and supporting electronic circuits, with a mobile application for real-time data presentation. Field measurements were conducted at two locations within Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Nigeria, and compared with measurements obtained using a commercial LK3600 radiation survey meter. Performance was assessed using Mean Square Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Percentage Error (MPE). The developed detector successfully detected and monitored background radiation and exhibited measurement trends comparable to the reference instrument, although it generally recorded higher dose rates. MSE values were 0.000473 and 0.000675, RMSE values were 0.02174 and 0.02598 µSv/h, and MPE values were 136.36% and 209.70% for Locations 1 and 2, respectively. The study demonstrated the feasibility of an affordable, portable, and real-time radiation monitoring system, providing a potentially accessible alternative for preliminary environmental radiation assessment. Further calibration, optimization, and validation against multiple reference instruments under varied environmental conditions are recommended.
